Dying Days In Heaven – An Introduction

The idea for this novel started about a decade ago and currently consists of thousands of words, plots lines, schemas, diagrams, ideas, and descriptions which are scattered all over the place. The novel mixes way too many genres but the aim is a slow burn thriller.

By publishing the first three chapters I am committing to develop the story, at least get a first draft, which then provides incentive to bring it all to fruition. Everything posted is a draft without professional editing.

The first three chapters introduce the characters and set the scene, and while they occupy different worlds and seem alien to each other, they are interconnected.

  1. Just A Little Bit Perverse. Meet Codger Spumante
  2. The Phantasm Sitting On Levity’s Shoulder. Meet Willow, Levity and Toko, collectively known as WiLTer
  3. 45 going on 25 aiming for Immortality. Meet Wun.

At this point the reader may decide to go no further, but if you do then you will read three paragraphs, each one providing a brief introduction to the prime protagonists in the novel.

Your choice whether to read on or return to start and go directly to the chapters.

Codger Spumante: You were a young up and coming architect with career aspirations who married the boss’s daughter. With a dual passport you could travel places where others couldn’t. When the boss asked you to carry a message to a friend in another country you thought nothing of it. Before you realise you have been blackmailed into being a courier for a government spy agency for a decrepit regime that is waging war on the general population. Your marriage destructs in alcoholic furore and your two last remaining associates, you wish you could call them friends, despise each other. The dictatorship lost and this is your retirement party, where other members of team of spies, who you hate and have been dependent on, can farewell you. You are aged and embittered, seeking retreat back to the family farm where you can hide and seek solace. Will the wheels of justice leave you alone or will you be called to testify at the Genuine Remorse Commission?

WiLTer, who are Levity, Toko and Willow: Salubrious greetings to you one and all and it’s a pleasure introducing meself cause I’s your humble narrator on this journey and me name is Toko and I’s the phantasm that sits on Levity’s shoulder cause when wes met Levity was fleeing her village massacre and plunged into the lake full of creatures of all nefarious and dangerous sorts while I was hidden in the reeds to where I had been exiled centuries past and Levity was so stressed like that she saw me which normal people cain’t and I saws her and we leaped to each other and I’s guided Levity past the uglies while she led me to an escape so we’s all good and dependent upon n other. So to speak. Then we was wanderin in the valley of desolation starving and dehydratin and thinkin that mebbe the end of brain thought was approaching when wes comes across Willow because she was going through her own traumatic experience and we won’t discuss the childhood here and now but sufficient to state that Willow was a sex worker junkie again going through the anguish of seekin withdrawal and just as Willow led us out of desolation to where there was at least enough to sup we aided her cleaning up her act. So we’s now a troika who lives in a penthouse apartment in a building abandoned due to rising sea levels and looked after by an anarcho-syndicalist cooperative. So we’s part of the struggle to survive and have ourselves a jolly fine time doin so when there’s all these evil nasties in the world tryin to bring us down, and it’s me pleasure to be your guide. And yes, I do know I’m a bit wordy.

Wun: At 1.4327 metres tall, excluding coiffure, weighing in at 40.2754 kilo when naked, Wun is 45 going on 25 anticipating to exceed 150. Wun is an integrated complexity of artificial, mechanical and Sapien parts driven by a consciousness enhanced through chemical stimulation. Wun is aspirational and an achiever, with initial goals now surpassed and ambition remaining unrequited. As a freelance contractor with disrespect for legal boundaries, wun is an emergent influence in a viciously competitive environment. Being a neopositivist obscurantist with pseudo nihilist leanings Wun professes, ‘As most humans are captured by the mendacity of day to day survival, enable them to enjoy life’s pleasures rather than expecting them to meaningfully engage with comprehension of profound matters. As I have had cause to cite, don’t ever forget which way they vote when provided opportunity.’ Wun lives ten steps beyond the author and refuses to display patience and wait. In return, the author has laid a few surprises.
